SpaceX mentions consciousness constantly. One of its core business propositions, and Elon Musk's ultimate idealistic goal, is to make humanity multi-planetary in order to preserve the light of consciousness. But there is an inherent flaw in that model. It fundamentally misunderstands what consciousness actually is, and misses the real miracle right in front of us. We are so focused on saving the baby that we forget the bathwater might be the actual universe.
Consider this: when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, the exact same ground beneath their feet contained the natural possibility of an iPhone and a Tesla. The possibility of a thing is as deeply woven into reality as the thing itself. Given an absurd amount of time, almost anything possible will happen. We do not know exactly how life sparked, but the code that allows for it was already running in the background before the Earth even formed.
In the grand timeline of the cosmos, there may be no real progress from the universe's perspective. There is only an enormous ledger of things that have not happened yet. We might just be the dinosaurs of right now, blind to possibilities that would look impossible from where we stand.
This is where the preservation model fails reality: distance does not save you from the medium. Space itself is expanding, and in places it is tearing apart faster than the speed of light. Moving our species to another planet in our solar system, or even another star system, does not escape the cosmic drift. More importantly, we still do not fully understand the fabric of spacetime itself. We only know that it is active, interactive geometry, and that consciousness operates within it.
If you put a rock in a box to keep it safe, but the space inside the box stops existing, the rock is gone. The same applies to us. If consciousness is a localized phenomenon tied to the physics of spacetime, then planting a flag on Mars does not preserve it. It only delays the inevitable.
You cannot preserve a fundamental possibility simply by shifting its physical location. If we truly want to preserve consciousness, the answer has to go beyond rockets. It would require moving the spark out of this medium entirely, exporting it cross-format and fully outside spacetime. Until we can do that, the real miracle is not where we place life, but the fact that the universe's code allowed us to exist in the first place.
